A member of a research group that has been monitoring the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic warned on Tuesday that persons below 18 years old may become “supercarriers” of the virus if age restrictions are eased in Metro Manila.
“Ang problema is magiging carrier sila at possible maging supercarrier pa nga sila [The problem is that age group may become carriers and possibly supercarriers],” OCTA Research group member Dr. Guido David said.
David stated that position when asked in a radio interview for his reaction on the plan of Metro Manila mayors to ask the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) to lower age restrictions in the metropolis.
“For economic reasons, maiitindihan naman natin yung justification nila [we can understand the mayors’ justification],” he said.
“Pero at the same time, alam naman natin yung bakuna hindi pa sila designed pa para sa mga below 16 years old eh [But at the same time, we know that vaccines for Covid-19 are not yet designed for those below 16 year old],” he added.
”Malaking factor ‘yan kasi hindi sila mapapabakunahan at lalo na yung sabi nila yung variant, mas nakakahawa sa bata [That is a big factor as they still cannot be vaccinated and experts say the new variant can be more infectious to children],” he warned.
The new Covid-19 variant has already affected 44 people in the Philippines. SOVEREIGNPH
