President Rodrigo Duterte has challenged Vice President Leni Robredo to go find vaccines for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) for the Philippines.
Robredo said in her weekly radio program that the government should make sure that the Covid-19 vaccines the Philippines received from China’s Sinovac are safe to use on the country’s health workers. She said Sinovac’s Covid-19 vaccines has not secured any recommendation from the Health Technology Assessment Council (HTAC).
Reacting to Robredo, Duterte said she is willing to give the vice president the money to buy the Covid-19 vaccines herself, adding that there is a tight supply for Covid-10 vaccines worldwide.
“Ngayon kung gusto mo talaga para mahinto ka, kunin mo ‘yong basket mo, mamalengke ka doon sa labas ng bakuna. Bigyan kita pera, para kung may mabili ka bilhin mo na agad at umuwi ka dito sa Pilipinas, bigay mo doon sa mga doctor (Now, if you really want to serve the country, get your basket then look for vaccines outside of the country. I will give you the funds so if you can buy the vaccines, you can go home to the Philippines and give the Covid-10 vaccines to doctors),” the President said.
Duterte admitted that Covid-19 suppliers in the west like Pfizer and AstraZeneca have limited stocks as richer nations have gobbled up their supplies.
The President added that Robredo simply wants to be relevant and sometimes makes an “idiotic stance.” “Yan ang mahirap sa’yo eh, (That is the problem with you), you want to be elevant. And you know, sometimes you make an idiotic stance,” Duterte said. SOVEREIGNPH
