The chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) failed to undergo the usual screening conducted by Oriental Mindoro’s health office when he visited the province on Thursday, which was also the day he was informed to have tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
The information came from the Oriental Mindoro provincial government that said Gen. Debold Sinas did not pass through the pier of the province in Calapan City, where health clearances are conducted. Sinas arrived instead by helicopter in the locality before proceeding to the PNP Regional Headquarters in the area.
The Oriental Mindoro provincial government also clarified that Provincial Administrator Hubbert Christopher Dolor’s presence at the PNP Region 4A office was not for the purpose of welcoming Sinas. Rather. Dolor was present to discuss the province’s vaccine rollout for Covid-19 and contact tracing efforts.
“For the information of the public, the presence of Provincial Administrator Hubbert Christopher Dolor at the PNP Mimaropa Regional Headquarters on Thursday was not to welcome the PNP chief,” a statement in Filipino posted at the province’s Facebook stated.
Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, the PNP’s number two man, took over as PNP officer-in-charge on Friday as Sinas had to be isolated.
“Following the unfortunate incident wherein our Chief PNP, Gen. Debold M. Sinas, tested positive for coronavirus, I was designated as the OIC (officer-in-charge) PNP as a matter of protocol,” Eleazar, PNP deputy chief for administration, told reporters. He said he would attend to the affairs of the police force temporarily until Sinas recovers from the disease.
