The impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen has been endorsed by House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco to the House Committee on Rules, or for it to be included in the chamber’s “order of business.”
Velasco’s letter dated March 25, 2021 showed the House Speaker endorsed the complaint to the House Committee on Rules, directing it to include the complaint in the order of business, which will pave the way for the start of the hearings on the complaint.
“We endorse herewith the original copies of the Impeachment Complaint filed by Mr. Edwin M. Cordevilla against Associate Justice Mario Victor Leonen of the Supreme Court of the Philippines,” Velasco’s endorsement read.
It was Cordevilla who filed the complaint against Leonen at the House on December 7, 2020.
The complaint of Cordevilla, secretary-general of the Filipino League of Advocates for Good Governance – Maharlika (FLAGG – Maharlika), was accepted and filed by Ilocos Norte Rep. Angelo Barba, cousin of former senator Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos.
Among the issues raised against Leonen are his not acting promptly on the more than 80 cases pending for his resolution at the Supreme Court, failure to act as chairman of the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal on the electoral protests of a number of candidates in the 2019 elections, and his failure to submit his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN) for 15 years dating back to his being connected with the University of the Philippines College of Law.
