The Philippines logged another record for daily cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) or 10,016 on Monday, which is also the first time daily virus cases breached the 10,000 mark.
The previous record was 9,838 logged on Friday. With Monday’s figure, the number of active Covid-19 cases is 115,495, threatening to overwhelm hospitals in areas with a concentration of cases.
The Department of Health (DOH) said the total Covid-19 case count is now 731,894 with 602,213 recoveries as 78 patients reportedly recovered also on Monday. The death toll is at 13,186 with 16 new deaths.
The DOH added that 95.9 percent of active cases exhibited mild symptoms only while 2.4 percent were asymptomatic. Furthermore, 0.7 percent of the patients have while another 0.7 percent are in critical condition.
With the spike in domestic Covid-19 cases, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the government’s decision to place the National Capital Region (NCR) and the four other provinces under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) happened at just the right time.
Lorenzana, who is also chair of the National Task Force Against Covid-19, said the timing was just right as the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) was monitoring very closely the spike of new Covid-19 cases.
” Our timing was just right, we have to observe for a couple of days ‘yung spike ng new cases, so we were watching closely, the IATF was watching closely the rise. When it breached 8,000, that’s the time that we acted,” he said in an television interview.
ECQ for Metro Manila and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal started March 29 and will end on April 4.”So today, we are on EQC and hopefully (with) this, we will stem the tide of the rising cases and let’s see, we’ll watch what happens next,” Lorenzana said. SOVEREIGNPH
