PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed a new Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice in Alexander Gesmundo, currently an Associate Justice at the SC.
Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo told a national daily of Gesmundo’s appointment by Duterte as the new Supreme Court (SC), citing that he is the “personal choice” of the President.
Gesmundo is the fourth magistrate to be appointed as Chief Justice by President Duterte, replacing Diosdado Peralta who retired last March 27.
Besides Peralta, another SC magistrate, Associate Justice Edgardo delos Santos, is set to retire. However, delos Santos has yet to formally inform when he would step down ahead of his mandatory retirement age of 70 years in June 2022.
He also advised his staff as early as March 19, through a letter, to start looking for other employment, knowing the difficulty in finding a job during the ongoing pandemic, SC spokesperson Brian Keith Hosaka said.Hosaka, quoting delos Santos, said health issues were the primary consideration in the decision.
