A publication associated with the Chinese Communist Party has warned the Philippines of a “strong response” if the country’s military would act “rashly” on the presence of Chinese vessels at Julian Felipe Reef.
Hu Xijin, editor of the Global Times newspaper, also said there were personalities in the Philippine military who were pro-American.
“The US has a geopolitical need for the Philippines and China to increase friction in the South China Sea,” Hu said in a video posted on the Global Times website.
“The Philippine military has many pro-American figures who are cooperating with Washington in this way,” Hu added.
The editor of the Global Times also issued a warning to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
“I would like to warn the Philippine military that it should not act rashly other than making some noise. Otherwise, China will definitely give a strong response,” he added.
The Department of Foreign Affars filed on Monday a second diplomatic protest over the issue, and even reminded the Chinese Embassy in Manila to show respect towards Philippine government officials.
The Chinese Embassy called Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana “unprofessional” as the Defense chief has been repeatedly calling for the withdrawal of the Chinese ships from Julian Felipe Reef, which is within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) but is also being claimed by China.
