The Department of Justice (DOJ) is looking into the trafficking of people who want to get out of the National Capital Region and four nearbu provinces currently under the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).
“We’ll respond to the call of (Transportation) Secretary Art Tugade. I’ll direct the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) to look into these alleged incidents of ‘human smuggling’ and conduct a full-blown investigation if there is any indication that the practice is widespread,” said Guevarra.
The issue came to the attention of the DOH after a video circulated on social media showing a truck with people inside with most of them not following health protocols for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) like not wearing face masks, face shields, or observing social distancing.
The video showed the trafficked people exiting a truck and them boarding a van. The truck’s route was between Quezon province and the Bicol region. The operators of the illegal transporting of people use social media to advertise their services.
The Department of Transportation earlier warned people travelling during this time when Covid-19 cases are spiking in various parts of the country, after it apprehended several colorum vehicles plying the NCR-Bicol route. At least 70 passengers who were being transported by apprehended colorum vehicles tested positive for Covid-19. SOVEREIGNPH
