CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur-Government troops thwarted possible terroristic attack of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) after seizing a total of fifty-three anti-personnel mines in Barangay Del Carmen last April 5, 2021.
Residents of the said Barangay reported the presence of the CTG in the area and prompted the elements of 96th Infantry Battalion (96IB) to conduct a security operation and encountered an undetermined number of communist NPA terrorists (CNTs).
After a 20-minute firefight, the enemies withdrew leaving behind a stockpile of anti-personnel mines; 33 pcs of which weighed 7-10 kilograms each while the remaining 20 pcs weighed 4-5 kilograms each.
Aside from the said explosives, several bomb components were also seized.
Aside from the International Humanitarian Law (IHL), the use of anti-personnel mines is a violation of RA 9851 or the Philippine Act on Crimes Against International Humanitarian Law, Genocide, and other Crimes Against Humanity which prohibits the use of weapons, projectiles and materials and methods of warfare which are of the nature to cause superfluous injury or unnecessary suffering.
Col. Jaime Abawag Jr., Brigade Commander of 902nd Infantry Brigade, said that the capture of the said explosives has prevented the CTG’s plan to conduct terrorism in the Region that further save the lives and limbs of our security forces and the innocent civilians as well.
He also thanked the residents of Del Carmen for reporting the presence of the CTG which prevented the communist terrorists from launching terror attacks just as what they did in Ligao, City Albay.
It can be recalled that three days before this development, two civilians were badly hurt after CTG members detonated an anti-personnel mine in the aforesaid place, while Bicolanos were observing the Holy Week
Joint Task Force Bicolandia Commander MajGen Henry Robinson Jr PA condemns this clear evidence of terrorism, saying, “These communist-terrorists extort money from the people including those who are poorest of the poor. Then, they will use the money for the production of these explosives which will later endanger the government troops, the innocent civilians they extorted and the communities.”
Robinson adds, “these acts are purely evil and we thank the local populace who, due to their complete abhorrence of the CTG’s lawlessness, have been cooperating with us in our campaign to hunt down these terrorists. Instead of giving in to the threats of this group, they report them to us or to the police, preempting the unlawful and treacherous acts of the CTG.”
Since July last year, government troops have already seized hundreds of explosives in Masbate, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte which only proved that CTG continues to produce bombs and explosives to spread terror in Bicol.
