At around 3:30 pm last April 23, 2021, communist NPA terrorists (CNTs) detonated an anti-personnel mine just as a pick-up truck carrying four civilian employees of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), was passing in Sitio San Jose, Barangay Jamorawon, Milagros.
Shrapnels hit the right portion of the vehicle injuring slightly one of its passengers identified as Dolsesemo Briol, 53. The said employees, two of them engineers, were inspecting an on-going road project and travelling from Barangay Tigbao to the town of Balud.
Joint Task Force Bicolandia (JTFB) strongly condemned the use of anti-personnel mine which is prohibited under the Mine Ban Convention, otherwise known as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti–Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction (or Mine Ban Convention). More than 150 countries have joined this treaty adopted in 1997.
The Republic of the Philippines signed the Mine Ban Treaty on December 3, 1997 and ratified it on February 15, 2000, becoming a State Party on August 1, 2000.
Immediately after the roadside explosion, the 2nd Infantry Battalion (2IB) under Lt. Col. Siegfried Felipe Awichen immediately scoured the area for possible arrest of the suspects.
Col. Aldwine Almase, Brigade Commander of the 903rd Infantry Brigade said that the attack, was a desperate act of the terrorist group to retaliate their continuing losses from the government’s campaign to crush terrorism in the island of Masbate.
“The CTG is severely losing the fight in Masbate because Masbateños are already expressing their strong disgust in their deceptions and terrorism. Because of this, the terrorists are now targeting even innocent civilians as they are no longer capable of facing our troops in combat.” Col. Almase said.
MajGen Henry Robinson, JTFB commander, explained that the communist terrorists are now resorting to beastly tactics to threaten and sow fear in the community in an attempt to sway the community back to acquiescence in their favor.
This is a cowardly act and purely evil, quipped Robinson.
“The general said “Masbateños together with the LGU officials are now one with the government’s campaign towards human and economic development and to attain it, united in eradicating communist insurgency.
“Patungkol sa mga miyembro naman ng CTG, alam naming napipilitan lang kayong gawin ang mga karahasang ito dahil sa takot na kayong makipagl;aban ng harapan. Bumaba na lamang kayo dahil tutulungan namin kayong magbagong buhay.”
Indignation rallies continue against communist insurgency, the latest of which was conducted simultaneously by multisectoral groups in various locations in Southern Luzon last Saturday to denounce 48 years of deceptions by the outlawed National Democratic Front.
The JTFB also joined the activity through a short program at the 9th Infantry Division’s Multi-Purpose gym where replica of NDFP’s flags were burned symbolizing that its anniversary is not worth celebrating for. (SPH)
