Senator Manny Pacquiao is still an ally of President Rodrigo Duterte despite the rift within the ruling PDP-Laban party that was fuelled by the holding of a national assembly that Duterte pushed for but Pacquiao opposed, according to Presidential spokesman Harry Roque.
Duterte is the PDP-Laban chairman while Pacquiao is the party president.
“I believe so, there were no changes despite the meeting of PDP-Laban pushing through, and he (Pacquiao) remains to be party president as of now,” Roque said partly in Filipino when queried if Pacquiao remains an ally of the president.
Roque was referring the PDP-Laban national assembly held on Monday in Cebu City that was marshalled by party vice chairman and Department of Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi.
Pacquiao reportedly wants to talk Duterte and discuss plans for 2022. However, Roque said the supposed meeting has no schedule yet.
The ruling PDP-Laban passed and adopted a resolution on Monday seeking to “convince” Duterte to run for vice president in the 2022 national elections.
PDP-Laban vice president for external affairs Raul Lambino, who moved for the adoption of the resolution, said the national council was held because of several petitions received different local government units asking Duterte to run for the vice presidential post in the next national elections.
“The text of this resolution read as follows: ‘Resolution to convince the party chairman, President Rodrigo Duterte, to run as Vice President in the 2022 national elections and for President Rodrigo Duterte to choose his running mate for president,” Lambino said. SOVEREIGNPH
