On the occasion of the National Migrant Workers Day, Senator Christopher ‘Bong” Go recognized our overseas Filipino workers, seafarers and all our countrymen in other countries.
The senator said that the biggest sacrifice of our migrant Filipinos is to be separated from their families and loved ones in order to seek greener pastures. “They have to deal with homesickness and loneliness living in lands of different cultures and languages, some even alien to our ways of life.”
Being away from the homeland, he added, especially during special family occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, graduations and weddings, Christmas or Easter, will never be the same despite advances in technology and social media.
Go said “Kaya naman bilang sukli sa kabayanihan ng mga migranteng Filipino ay isinulong ko noong Mayo 25, 2021 ang Senate Bill No. 2234 of which I am the author and sponsor, na kung maisasabatas ay lilikhain ang Department of Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos.”
It is important for our countrymen overseas to have their own department which will closely monitor and focus on their needs, in order to safeguard their conditions and respond quickly to any emergencies they will encounter while abroad, the senator added.
Their contribution to our economy is precisely the reason why we regard them as our “new heroes” who deserves their own department serving a one-stop government agency to facilitate their needs before, during and after their sojourns abroad.
