Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio will not run for president in 2022 if her father will be gunning for the post of vice president.
“Sabi ni Mayor Sara, ‘pag tumakbo si PRD (President Rodrigo Duterte) vice president ay ‘hindi na ako tatakbo’ (Mayor Sara said if PRD (President Rodrigo Duterte) runs for vice president ‘I will not run’),” Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said in his television show “Counterpoint.”
He further said that the Davao City mayor does not want to run for president in 2022 with her father as running mate for “personal” reasons.
“Iba naman yung reason ni Sara, more of personal yung kanya (Her reason is different, it is more personal),” Panelo said.
So far, however, Sara Duterte has yet to disclose her plans for 2022 even if some parties are starting to rally behind her, like the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD).
House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez said last week that the Lakas-CMD has renewed its alliance agreement with the regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) of Sara Duterte ahead of next year’s elections.
He said the alliance agreement would bind the two parties to support whoever they decide to field as presidential candidates in next year’s polls.
“If Mayor Sara decides to seek higher office for 2022, we are ready to work for her victory in the coming election,” Romualdez said.
