There is no stopping Senator Manny Pacquiao from running for president in 2022 even if the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) won’t support him.

General Santos City councillor Franklin Gacal, a longtime friend of Pacquiao, said the senator said before leaving for the US that he is determined to run for president in 2022. Pacquiao has a world title fight against Errol Spence Jr. in Los Angeles on August 22.

“Definitely Pacquiao will run for president in the coming 2022 election. He told me this before leaving for Los Angeles,” Gacal said.

Gacal, however, said he believes Pacquiao will be ousted as president of PDP-Laban in the party’s national council meeting on July 17.

“Once it happens, it will be unwise for the senator to remain with the party,” he said.

“Before leaving for the United States, Pacquiao insisted that he is the legitimate president and not only acting president of the party as he was referred to by some,” he added.

There are also reports coming out of the PDP-Laban camp that the Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go is being urged to run for president in 2022 with President Rodrigo Duterte gunning for vice president.

Gacal, who has also followed Pacquiao’s career, has kicked off a movement to support Pacquiao’s bid for the presidency.

Meanwhile, Rogelio Garcia, a PDP-Laban member, said in a radio interview here that Pacquiao’s position in the party has already been declared vacant.

“Many of our partymates do not even consider Pacquiao as one of us,” Garcia added.

He also criticized Pacquiao’s not attending Senate hearings and sessions.
