Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and Senate President Vicente Sotto III will team up to run for the country’s two top positions in the 2022 national polls.
Lacson will be gunning for the presidency and Sotto will be his running mate, according to various media outlets, with the official announcement to be made on August 4, 2021.
“You can already read between the lines that the answer is yes,” Sotto said in an exclusive television interview.
Sotto is currently the chairman of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).
News of the Lacson-Sotto tandem for the 2022 polls effectively shuts out the possibility of Senator Manny Pacquiao of running under the NPC. Last June, Pacquiao was in talks with Sotto but the Senate president said it had nothing to do with politics. Also, Mayor Luis “Chavit” Singson of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, a long-time friend of Pacquiao, joined the NPC last month.
A national daily said the talks between Sotto and Pacquiao were about “where the country was headed, how the country will be run in the future and whether they can solve its problems,” and that Lacson was present in the talks.
Pacquiao over the weekend was ousted as president of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Laban ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) with Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, the former vice chairman of the party.
