The new Chinese ambassador to the United States Qin Gang has called on the two countries to join hands to combat the still-spreading coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
“How about our two countries working together on solutions, e.g. more effective vaccines and helping other countries?” Qin tweeted on Friday.
The diplomat arrived in Washington in late July and is in a 14-day self-quarantine in his residence.
He said he is “fine in quarantine,” but the rampant spread of the Delta variant is “concerning.”
So far, the world has registered more than 200 million Covid-19 infections and nearly 4.3 million deaths, according to a tally by the Johns Hopkins University.
China has been taking positive steps to help end the global Covid-19 pandemic and recently pleged to supply at least 2 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines worldwide.
“China will continue to do its best to help other developing countries cope with the virus. In the course of this year, China will strive to provide 2 billion doses of vaccines to the world,” President Xi Jinping said in a written message to the first meeting of the International Forum on Covid-19 Vaccine Cooperation.China hosted the forum at the level of foreign ministers, which is being attended by at least 30 countries and international organizations, including the United Nations.
