The faction in the ruling the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) loyal to Senator Manny Pacquiao has belittled the threat by another faction to expel him.
PDP-Laban Executive Director Ron Munsayac even said the group seeking to expel Pacquiao from the party is distracting the senator in his preparation for a world title fight in Las Vegas on August 22.
“The expelled group is only peddling lies to further their malicious and baseless claims. Hence, this issue is all a wild bluff meant to distract Senator Manny Pacquiao from his world championship boxing bout,” Munsayac said.
The group within PDP-Laban threatening to expel Pacquiao from the party is led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, who in turn is loyal to its chairman, President Rodrigo Duterte.
PDP-Secretary General Melvin Matibag said Pacquiao faces expulsion from the party because the senator converted his regional People’s Champ Movement (PCM) into a national party in December last year.
However, Matibag said “snapshots of documents being circulated actually show that within days of becoming PDP-Laban President, Senator Manny Pacquiao gave up the presidency of the People’s Champ Movement.”
Pacquiao was ousted as PDP-Laban president in a party convention last July. Cusi was elected the new party president.
Matibag said on Friday they have given Pacquiao two weeks to explain his side on the issue.
