Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel said that Senator Manny Pacquiao cannot be expelled from the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) party, claiming that Pacquiao’s People Champ Movement (PCM) is still a regional political party.
“As of today the PCM is a regional party” hence, no issue – because the situation is national versus regional,” Pimentel, the PDP-Laban executive vice president, said, even saying that the boxing champion is not a member of PCM anymore.
“And then as of today, MP (Manny Pacquiao) not a member of PCM. Hence, wala na namang isyu (there is no issue), because the issue becomes whether a member of a national party can resign from a regional party. Of course, he can. So, nasaan ang (where is the) issue?” he asked.
Pimentel also continued to hold on to the view that the camp of PDP-Laban president and Energy Secretary Alfonso are renegades within the party who simply grabbed power. Pacquiao was replaced by Cusi as the party president in July.
“These people moving against Senator MP are expelled members of the party and they are doing it under the auspices of rogue power grabbers who are not recognized by the legitimate party,” said Pimentel.
PDP-Laban Secretary General Melvin Matibag said Pacquiao faces expulsion from the party as there were documents circulating online that PCM has been transformed into a national party. The PDP-Laban charter bans membership in another national party.
Pacquiao founded PCM in 2009 and is based in Mindanao.
