A party of laborers and peasants is eyeing Sen. Manny Pacquiao as its presidential bet for the 2022 polls.
A news daily reported that the Labor Party of the Philippines (LPP), which is also known as the Worker and Peasants Party (WPP), sees Pacquiao as being able to champion the cause of the workers’ class.
“You bear the pivotal light beam in this journey. The Workers and Peasants Party at its nexus is the repository of the laboring class. Without an iota of doubt, you are the quintessential bearer of the Labor Party,” the party said in a statement.
Prof. Oscar Morado, the LPP senior vice president for operations and party spokesman, also said the senator has “leadership clothed with decency and transcendence.”
He added that the government needs a change in leadership and that the country’s state of affairs is a mess.
“To say that we are a total mess is an understatement. We need genuine change in leadership. A Labor government that will define the aspirations for peace, unity, trust, transparency in governance, progress and competitiveness,” Morado said.
LPP said the despite Pacquiao’s loss to Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas in their title bout over the weekend, the party said the country remains proud of him.
“The country is proud of you. Your loss is a pause for the future. The party is fully in high gear to quarterback your run for the presidency,” it said.
After his loss to Ugas, Pacquiao said he will make known this September his political plans for 2022.
Pacquiao was ousted as president of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) in July following a dispute with its officials and members allied with President Rodrigo Duterte, the party chairman.
