The infighting within the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) worsened as the faction of Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III ousted on Sunday President Rodrigo Duterte as the party chairman.
Duterte belongs to the faction that also counts newly-elected PDP-Laban president and Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi.
PDP-Laban Execuctive Director Ron Munsayac said that effective Sunday, Pimentel replaces Duterte as the party chairman.
Munsayac said the “original” PDP-Laban convened its national council on Sunday afternoon.
“It was attended by our national and regional officers and national committee chairmen led by Party President and our ‘Pambansang Kamao’ Senator Manny Pacquiao, who is currently airborne on his way home here,” he said in a message to reporters.
“The PDP-Laban National Council elected Senator Koko Pimentel as its chairman and former Gov. Lutgardo Barbo as vice chairman,” he added.
The latest move by the Pimentel faction, which also counts Pacquiao, comes as the faction of Duterte is set to formally declare this September 8 Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go as its presidential bet and Duterte as its vice presidential bet for 2022.
Also, the Duterte wing said it is considering Pacquiao to lead PDP-Laban’s senatorial line up for 2022.
