Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio went on a one-week medical leave starting Tuesday (Sept. 28) to October 5, with her younger brother, Vice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, designated as acting mayor during the period.
The official announcement was made last Sunday and no reason was stated for her medical leave.
“She will be out of town for medical purposes. She is continuously present online to meet deadlines for her office,” the announcement said.
The Davao City mayor’s leave was contained in a memorandum dated September 23, which also said that Sebastian “shall assume the duties and responsibilities of the said position (acting mayor) as mandated by law and oversee the overall operations of all city government/departments/officers, and perform such other duties as may be directed by the undersigned from time to time.”
Sara Duterte’s filing a leave of absence comes at a time when people are speculating on whether she would consider running for a national position in the 2022 polls and with the filing of candidacies already nearing. The Davao City mayor said she will run for reelection in next year’s polls.
