Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao has been expelled from the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) by the faction led by its president and Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi.

This, after Pacquiao filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for president for the 2022 polls under the Progressive Movement for the Devolution of Initiatives (Promdi), one of the organization now under the MP3 alliance that counts the People’s Champ Movement and PDP-Laban. MP obviously means Manny Pacquiao.

The Cusi faction called Promdi a “relatively unknown party.”

PDP-Laban Secretary-General Melvin Matibag said a  member filing a COC under another political party can be expelled automatically based on the party’s Charter.

“The PDP Laban National Executive Committee met October 1 and a resolution was approved automatically expelling Senator Pacquaio from PDP-Laban in accordance with the party constitution,” Matibag said.

“Senator Pacquiao claims that he is the legitimate President of PDP-Laban and even called his own National Assembly where he accepted their so-called proclamation as presidential candidate and yet he is running for president under Promdi. Let’s call a spade a spade. If that is not disloyalty, betrayal, and abandonment of PDP Laban, I don’t know what is,” Matibag added.

Pacquiao was earlier ousted as president of PDP-Laban and was threatened with expulsion, but the wing within the party led by Senator Aquilino “Kiko” Pimentel 3rd continued to back Pacquiao as their presidential candidate for 2022.
