Slain in the encounter was Jorge Madlos, known as “Ka Oris,” the top NPA leader in Mindanao, said Philippine Army 4th Infantry Division Commander Maj. Gen. Romeo Brawner.

“Ka Oris’ reign of terror has finally ended. Unfortunately, the consequences of his atrocities led to a tragic ending. Now, justice has been served for those innocent civilians and their communities he terrorized for several decades. His death could be the final blow for the eventual collapse of the communist terrorist group here,” Brawner stated.

He said the military’s FA-50 fighter jets pounded the position of the NPA rebels led by Madlos and at around 11:30 a.m., ground forces conducted the final assault and encountered more or less 30 NPA rebels. Madlos was eventually killed in the encounter with soldiers. Two other rebels were killed in the clash and no casualties were reported from the side of the government.

Brawner said the death of Madlos was confirmed after his body was recovered from the site of the clash.

The military official earlier called on Madlos and his comrades to return to the fold of the law as government troops relentlessly pressed operations against the NPA rebels in Bukidnon.

“I am personally appealing to Jorge Madlos alias Ka Oris and his group to return to the peaceful path now and go down from the mountains so that they can be given vaccines and proper medical attention,” the military official said in an earlier statement.

Civilians who provided information on the rebels also helped the military crush the communist rebels.

Besides being the top NPA leader in Mindanao, Madlos also acted as the spokesman of the communist rebel movement in the south.
