The faction within the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi is closely watching developments from the side of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio who announced last Monday her decision to withdraw her candidacy for a second term as city mayor.

The move by the incumbent Davao City mayor has fueled speculation she will be running for a national post in 2022.

Cusi, the PDP-Laban president, said that Sara Duterte’s possible decision to run for a national position in 2022 “will affect the political landscape.”

“PDP Laban watches with keen interest the developments on Sara Duterte’s decision to withdraw her certificate of candidacy for Davao City mayor, especially considering the public support she enjoys,” Cusi said in a statement.

“In any event, her actions, including any decision to run for a national elective office, will most certainly affect the political landscape,” he added.

The ruling party’s presidential bet for 2022, Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, said earlier he was willing to give way to Sara Duterte to become PDP-Laban’s standard bearer for 2022.

The Commission on Elections has given political parties up to November 15 to make substitutions for their bets in the May 2022 polls.
