Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. may end up “working together” in the 2022 polls, the president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party said.
Duterte recently joined the Lakas-CMD, fueling speculation that she will be seeking a national position in 2022.
“I think the discussions between the two have been along those lines. We are thinking very positively about this,” House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, president of the Lakas-CMD, said in a virtual presser.
He added that the Lakas-CMD “would obviously want the highest position” for Sara Duterte, who also dropped her bid seeking a second term as Davao City mayor.
When asked if the talks will result in Sara Duterte and Marcos not running against each other in 2022, Romualdez said: “Basically yes. I’m hoping for that. We’re all hoping for that, that they can work together.”
The Commission on Elections has given political parties up to November 15 or Monday to makes substitutions or finalize their line ups for the 2022 polls.
Marcos is running under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas and has yet to name his running mate.
Meanwhile, the faction within the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi are closely watching Sara Duterte’s latest moves, as her plans for next year’s elections could alter the country’s current political landscape.
