Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go is withdrawing from the 2022 presidential race, saying he was making the move for the sake of his family and President Rodrigo Duterte.

Ayaw rin talaga ng aking pamilya kaya naisip ko na siguro ay hindi ko pa panahon sa ngayon. Diyos lang ang nakakaalam kung kailan ang tamang panahon. Ayaw ko ring maipit si Pangulong Duterte higit pa sa tatay ang pagmamahal ko sa kanya (My own family does not want me to run so I thought that it is not yet the time to run for president. Only God knows when the time is right. I also do not want President Duterte to make choices as my love for him is more than that for a father),” Go said on Tuesday.

“In the past few days, I realized that my heart and my mind are contradicting my actions,” he added.

The President’s daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, is running for vice president under a four-party alliance with former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. who is gunning for president.

Go made the statement during the wreath laying ceremony at the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan for the 158th birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio where President Duterte was the guest.

On November 25, Go started giving hints of his possible withdrawal from the 2022 presidential race.

Tao lang po ako na nasasaktan at napapagod din. O baka dahil sadyang napakarumi at ganun kainit lang talaga ang pulitika. Talagang nagreresist po ang aking katawan, puso at isipan. Pati po ang aking pamilya ay nahihirapan (I’m just a person who gets hurt and also gets tired. Or maybe it’s because politics is so dirty and so heated. My body, heart and mind are really resisting. Even my family is having a hard time),” he said over social media.
