Speculations on the campaign trail boils to a single nagging question: Will President Duterte endorse a presidential candidate in the coming May 9 elections?

Last November, 2021, President Duterte raised the hands of Senator Bong Go after the latter filed his Certificate of Candidacy at the Comelec. But a month had not yet settled in, the Senator withdrew his candidacy saying he lacked preparation for the position.

If so, who is his candidate and when will he announce it?

Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs Jacinto Paras recommended to President Rodrigo Duterte to endorse the presidential candidacy of former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. because the latter would be the “best to protect” him against supposedly trumped up charges when he steps down from office.

Paras called on Duterte to join his party PDP-Laban in endorsing Marcos, saying that the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. is a “very loyal friend” and it would benefit the President to have a friend and ally as his successor.

It will be remembered that the president’s party, PDP-Laban after much consultations decided to endorse the candidacy of Bongbong Marcos, who is running as standard-bearer of the coalition that also has the presidential daughter running as his vice-presidential running mate.

In announcing the party vote, PDP-Laban president Alfonso Cusi showed to the media a copy of Resolution No. 26, Series of 2022, expressing the group’s support for a Marcos’ presidency.

“BBM is the candidate whose vision of governance is most aligned with the PDP-Laban’s 11-point agenda…To promote ‘Unity for Sustainability’ of socio-economic development and national progress,” the PDP-Laban resolution stated.

But does the party endorsement stop there?

Placed on the spot in an ambush interview, presidential man-Friday Senato Christopher Bong Go said, “I cannot speak on behalf of the President until he himself makes an announcement.”

While he cannot speak on behalf of the President, Go said that “I myself already declared my support for the candidates that his party, the PDP-Laban, is formally endorsing, who are Bongbong Marcos and Sara Duterte, for president and vice-president respectively.”

“Ang sinasabi nila, ay ipagpapatuloy ng tambalang Marcos-Duterte ang magagandang programang sinimulan ng Pangulong Duterte. Kaya hopefully yung magagandang programa na nakakatulong, yung Build Build Build program, mga free education, free irrigation, ito pong Malasakit Center, mga healthcare natin, among others,” Go added.

Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte said there are signs that his father, President Rodrigo Duterte, will endorse the presidential candidacy of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Speaking in South Cotabato, Baste Duterte said he is basing his prediction on the recent declaration of support for Marcos issued by the bloc in the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) party that is aligned with the President.

During a chance interview in South Cotabato, Duterte said he is basing his prediction on the recent declaration of support for Marcos issued by the bloc in the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) party that is aligned with the President.

President Duterte and Marcos had a “cordial meeting” in Malacañang last week, but the Palace made it clear that the President did not give his blessing to the candidate, whom he once described as a “weak leader” and “spoiled child.”

Vice Mayor Duterte said at least 80 percent of Davaoeños support Marcos as well, and he hopes to make it 90 percent soon.

However, Baste disclosed that the family has “not really” talked about whom their father will anoint as his successor.
