The rally of presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in Tacloban City on Saturday drew a huge crowd that started to converge at the Leyte Sports Development Center from the afternoon despite some rains.
Organizers placed the crowd estimate at about 150,000.
Among the celebrities who attended the rally was comedian Bayani Agbayani who chanted “Tao kami, hindi kami sibuyas (We’re humans, not onions)!” and “Hindi kami bayad (We’re not paid)!“ before Marcos and his entourage took the stage of the Leyte Sports Development Center.
“Unity is the first step for the Philippines to go back to a better situation, as we have not yet recovered from the Covid pandemic, the economy has not yet recovered from the effects of the pandemic, and we have a lot of things to do,” Marcos, also known as BBM in the campaign trail, in Filipino.
His running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, was not around but Marcos made a pitch that the people of Tacloban vote for her.
Marcos was supposed to go to Maasin City, Southern Leyte on Saturday but called it off due to bad weather in Eastern Visayas. In a video message to thousands of supporters waiting at the Maasin City terminal, Marcos apologized to supporters who have been waiting before sunrise.
“I’m here in Tacloban and it’s raining hard. Our pilot said it is very risky to continue our trip to Southern Leyte. Thank you for your support. We will find way to visit Southern Leyte on some other days,” Marcos said.
Tacloban, the hometown of her mother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos, is considered BBM’s bailiwick.
Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez and Leyte First District Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez are his first cousins.
